Ryan Smith to trial with Real Zaragoza?

This came out of nowhere, but word is out today that Ryan Smith is going on trial with Spanish side Real Zaragoza. This is a very interesting twist to everything that's happened lately involving Smith. First, it came as a surprise to fans that he has chose to go back to England and leave Kansas City for the rest of the season. The reason for this was so that Smith could "deal with family issues." But now, this has all seemed to become more complicated. Smith looks like he wants to be gone from Sporting for good - and make his move to a club in Europe.

There's a catch, though. If everything that Peter Vermes and Ryan Smith have released to the media is true, then it seems as though Smith should still technically be under Sporting Kansas City contract - at least that's what you'd think. However, Ryan Smith released this to Sky Sports in England today: "I'm a free agent now, so I can join any club that is interested in me, and there has been a few clubs interested so far." In that same article Smith says that moving back to England was only because he wanted to be closer to his family and daughter. He says that playing for a club in Europe would be better than in the United States because he'd be much closer to his family. Apparently Smith has had interest recently from English sides in the Championship, England's second division of soccer, as well as throughout other countries in Europe.

All we can do now is just to see what comes of the next week or so. I have a good feeling that Vermes will be releasing something on this to clear the air, and we will know Smith's contract status before long.

  1. I understand. Being 24 and half a world away from family would be tough. Even tougher when you have a child half a world away. It would have been nice to see him stay at Sporting and thrive but I wish him nothing but the best.
