Setting my blog apart from others

At the end of 2011, I came up with some resolutions for the blog. One of the things I wanted to focus on in 2012 was differentiating my blog from others.

Charles Gooch (writer for the Kansas City Star and blogger at The Full 90) said it nicely:

"For other bloggers: Figure out what it is that you bring to the table and bring it to the table...we can't all do the same thing."

The amount of blogs covering Sporting KC going into the New Year  is impressive - but the only problem's that there's nothing much to help tell them apart. Yes, we're obviously not all doing the exact same things, but we don't have enough people in the blogosphere making distinct choices for their blogs, things readers haven't seen before. What's the point of all of us stating the facts? Now, I'm not saying that this is all bloggers do - and most of the news bloggers bring to attention are things that the average fan would otherwise not see. I just want to try to get away from writing the obvious; things people could just as easily see on the Sporting KC official website.

I don't want to discontinue my usual coverage of Sporting KC; I just want to add an idea that's unique and that readers find interesting. My new project for the blog was inspired directly from my blog's name, The Footy Chronicles, basically meaning 'soccer stories.' That's why I've decided to now start writing feature stories on my blog, showcasing other people's personal experiences with soccer. This can work a couple different ways: Part of the time, the person featured will write their own piece, or story, which I will directly put on the blog. The other way of doing this is simply having interviews, which can just as easily showcase interesting perspectives on soccer.

Again, many of the things I'm already doing on the blog will continue. This new project is something that I'll begin focusing on, but it's certainly not going to be the only thing ever posted. My first feature story will most likely be on the blog later this week. I already have three different people contacted and arranged to be featured on the blog, and I'm very excited to give readers interesting perspectives on soccer, most importantly, Sporting KC.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or opinions? I'd love your feedback. Share in the comments below.

  1. I like the idea. Having a blog just for the sake of self-gratification or listening to yourself talk is pointless. Some new opinions or perspectives are welcome. Keep up the good work of keeping us posted on Robb Heineman's latest teasing tweets on the ongoing jersey sponsor mystery. I think Robb's pretty much a marketing genius.

  3. Neat idea! Can't wait to read it- maybe start with your own fan story? I would LOVE to see that.
